Andrew Johnson Biography

Andrew Johnson was the 17th President of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869. He assumed the presidency after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and was the first president to be impeached by the House of Representatives.

Johnson was a Southern Democrat who strongly supported states’ rights and opposed efforts to extend civil rights to African Americans after the Civil War. Conflict with the Republican-controlled Congress marked Johnson’s presidency, and he faced opposition from Radical Republicans who sought to enforce a more comprehensive Reconstruction program.

Johnson’s vetoes of Reconstruction-related legislation and his attempts to remove members of the Reconstruction government in the South resulted in his impeachment by the House of Representatives. However, the Senate acquitted him and he completed his term as president.
