Before his retirement in , Keith was Head of Deptford Green School, a mixed comprehensive in South East London.

Under his leadership the school gained a national reputation for its work in citizenship education. He received an OBE for services to education in and was knighted in Keith has worked as a government adviser and was the lead writer of the curriculum report ‘Diversity and Citizenship’.

He is currently a trustee of APIE (a charity working in education in Rwanda) and a trustee of the Wimbledon Foundation. He is also an honorary fellow of Goldsmiths University, an Hon DEd De Montfort University and an Hon. DLit(Ed) London University.
